Inconvenient truth...
Doing research on "local" hill towns. Don't know what will come of it, but looking at the median age, race, and household income was rather interesting. I figured most were "white", but I had no idea that the average age was somewhere in the 40's. Their average income (of 19 towns) was $39k. YIKES!
I paid $4.09 for gas on Wednesday. By Friday, it was $4.19. Yesterday it was $4.23. Granted, we're in a remote area, but how can people that make $39k/yr manage that along with all of life's other expense? Perhaps gas is cheaper in the hills. I'd bet most drive pick-ups or other vehicles that aren't known for their gas mileage. I get 25mpg on my car that is paid for. I'm the only air-bag in it, so I do have some safety concerns given the route I take to/from work, but at those kind of prices, I can't see where we could afford to get a vehicle that would get less mileage.
We make significantly more than $39k/year. I don't know how others make it. We're buckling down...trouble is, we weren't that extravagant to begin with.
I suppose we just pray that both of us keep our jobs and that nothing major comes up.
