Innocence...
A couple weeks ago, someone on a message board that frequent asked the question (to about 4000 of her closest friends!) if songs marked a particular time/place for others like they do for her. All of the respondents chimed in with stories of how a certain song reminded them of a boyfriend, car they owned, or good/silly/sad times with friends/family.
I really gave that some thought, cuz of course all kinds of songs remind me of certain times in my life, but mostly I think that the older ones take me back to my late teens/early 20's when pretty much the only person I had to be responsible for and accountable to was myself. Home, family, errands, volunteering, work, appointments, and committments seem to clutter up our time. These songs take us back to when our days were simpler. Maybe.
Over coffee with a friend this week, I shared this observation that my imaginary friends and I had. She suggested that the songs were also tied to things that will be forever connected to our innocence.
Yes, one single word, innocence really does sum up a time in our lives that can not be taken from us or the people we shared it with.
